Elder CJones: Last Week in Valle Hermoso

I have been blessed to serve here in Valle Hermoso for the past five months. I have had the blessing of meeting and teaching these people about the gospel of Jesus Christ. I know it it true and that we will come closer to God as we apply it to our lives.

This past weekend,we had stake conference and we were able to listen to wonderful messages given by the stake presidency and an area seventy. I love the messages that were given and how we are blessed as we follow the guidance of our leaders.

The area seventy talked about the importance of building firm foundations in our lives so that we can stand strong against the adversary. I loved his talk and how he said that we all need to be our best so that we can be worthy to have these blessings.

Being worthy and willing reminded me of a story I heard years ago,

"I should like to tell you of three eighteen-year-old boys. In 1856 more than a thousand of our people, some of them perhaps your forebears, found themselves in serious trouble while crossing the plains to this valley. Because of a series of unfortunate circumstances, they were late in getting started. They ran into snow and bitter cold in the highlands of Wyoming. Their situation was desperate, with deaths occurring every day. President Young learned of their condition as the October general conference was about to begin. He immediately called for teams, wagons, drivers, and supplies to leave to rescue the bereft Saints. When the first rescue team reached the Martin Company, there were too few wagons to carry the suffering people. The rescuers had to insist that the carts keep moving. When they reached the Sweetwater River on November 3, chunks of ice were floating in the freezing water. After all these people had been through, and in their weakened condition, that river seemed impossible to cross. It looked like stepping into death itself to move into the freezing stream. Men who once had been strong sat on the frozen ground and wept, as did the women and children. Many simply could not face that ordeal. And now I quote from the record: "Three eighteen-year-old boys belonging to the relief party came to the rescue, and to the astonishment of all who saw, carried nearly every member of the ill-fated handcart company across the snowbound stream. The strain was so terrible, and the exposure so great, that in later years all the boys died from the effects of it. When President Brigham Young heard of this heroic act, he wept like a child, and later declared publicly, 'that act alone will ensure C. Allen Huntington, George W. Grant, and David P. Kimball an everlasting salvation in the Celestial Kingdom of God, worlds without end.'" (Solomon F. Kimball, Improvement Era, Feb. 1914, p. 288.) Mark you, these boys were eighteen years of age at the time. And, because of the program then in effect, they likely were holders of the Aaronic Priesthood. Great was their heroism, sacred the sacrifice they made of health and eventually of life itself to save the lives of those they helped. They are part of the heritage that lies behind you of the Aaronic Priesthood. Be true, my young brethren, be true to that great inheritance. True to the faith that our parents have cherished, True to the truth for which martyrs have perished, To God's command, Soul, heart, and hand, Faithful and true we will ever stand."

Mainly to my brother who have the Aaronic Priesthood and everyone else who reads this. I know that we need to be worthy and willing to serve at whatever time, and the Lord will bless us from on high!

I love this gospel and I testify of the truthfulness of it!

Elder CJones: One Year!

"You are doing hard things" -Mom

This week I completed one year in the mission. It has gone so fast and it's crazy to think that I am here. I love this missionary work and sometimes I wish that it would move slower so that I could work more each day.

This week, Elder Martinez and I have been studying a lot together. I want to share one thing I learned this week.

My companion posed the question, "What is the difference between Wisdom and Knowledge?" Thinking deeper, we entered a conversation that made me think. Knowledge is just the information that you know to be true. Everybody has knowledge. Wisdom is the application of the knowledge that we have. Wisdom means that we show true faith.

James 1:5 says,"If any of you lack wisdom." This means that we need to have the intention to follow through on the knowledge that God will give us when we ask and that is when He will give the response.

We are teaching a lot of families and people. We are focused on five for right now. Yulieta and Mia are sisters and are really looking forward to a baptism on Saturday. We will be working with them this week for that.

Nataly, Daniel, and Angel are a family. Nataly is the mom and her two sons are Daniel and Angel. We will be working with them for baptism in November. Pray that they will be able to find the answers that they are looking for!

I know this church is true and I know and testify that God lives!!

Elder CJones: Better Than Christmas!

"When we are in the light, we have a perfect brightness of hope." -President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

For those of you who know me well, know that I LOVE General Conference!! There is nothing to could pull me away from such an amazing opportunity to listen to the voice of the prophets and apostles. This conference was one of my most favorites. I was able to watch in English with three other American missionaries in our small clerk's office. Oh how I am grateful for the internet in which the Gospel can be shared in every language so everyone can understand perfectly and clearly about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Since I am from Utah many people asked me if I had the opportunity once to go to conference live and what it was like. I am so grateful that we live to close and that we have the chance to go when we would like.

Conference and the words of the prophets always touch my heart so that I can more fully feel of the love of my Savior Jesus Christ.

My "new" companion, Elder Martinez, was my companion about eight months ago in Reynosa. We are now back together and better friends. I love working with this amazing, spiritual giant! He is from Monterrey, Nuevo Neon, a city about three hours from the mission. He loves to try and speak English and I help him when I can. When he was a little kid his parents were baptized but they are not active. He has been out for a year. Elder Martinez has three weeks more in the mission than I do and I am so glad that I can work with him again. He has a very strong personality and our teaching styles go very well together.

Here, in Valle Hermoso, the most difficult thing about teaching is having people commit to come to church. Even though they know it is right, they are unwilling to act on their faith and attend. I hope that you all will pray for the people here and will keep the missionaries in your thoughts and prayers!

I love you all and I know and testify that this church is true and everything that was said in conference is the word of God. If anyone is struggling with anything that was said, take it to God just as James directs (James 1:5-6) and just like Joseph Smith did and I promise that you will find your answer!

Elder CJones: Once I Was 11 Months Old

This week we celebrated Mexican Independence Day, it was Friday and Saturday and the people just party hard and get drunk. We stayed away from the parties and the beer. It was great, the ward had a little party and few members came and brough even fewer investigators.

Not much has been going on. I guess I have gotten used to all the crazy things and the normal life of a missionary that I don´t really have a lot to share all the time, it´s all normal for me.

I really love the mission, here I have rubiks cubes and I love to use them to teach lessons because it helps the people understand me. We like to use examples to help the people understand the importance of the Gospel.

I just want to say that I love this Gospel, there are so many blessings that come from it. I have seen them in my life and others have seen it in theirs. I am helping the people here to understand and to more fully take on life with Christ at their side.

I testify of the truthfulness of the Gospel!

Elder CJones: Little Wonders

"Love to serve, serve to love" -Dad

A typical Valle Hermoso Twilight
This week was a week well planned and put together by my companion and me. We had a lot of success this week and we thank it to our prayers and the diligence in our work.

We are preparing three people for baptism this month and are hoping that a few more will be willing to come to church so they can start their eternal progression. The work that we do together is powerful and we know that is all because we trust in each other and in God.

Flor is a mother who is looking to find happiness in her life. She is about 45 and one of her friends who lives in Utah told her about the church. She is coming every week. She has a desire to learn, to be baptized, and share the Gospel with the people around her. She is going through a lot of family problems and she needs our prayers so she can feel happy and have the blessings of the Gospel and a happy family in her life.

Estrella is another investigator, is 14 years old. We met her one morning as we were walking down a dirt road. She was on the second floor of her house and through the window and we began to talk to her. Our recent convert, Anahi, is helping us teach her so Estrella can feel like she has friends at church. She is really happy when she has the chance to talk to us and come to church.

Marianela is a young mom. She is 20. Her husband is a member of the church and they are looking toward a goal as an eternal family. She is feeling that she needs to wait for baptism but we are trying to help her understand that the longer she waits the longer it will be until they can go to the temple. Pray for them both that they will be able to go to the temple in a year.

 I made Brownies!!
One of the hardest things for me here in the mission is the heat!! The average temprature each day is 104 degrees. Some days are hotter than others. The humidity is deadly! On a normal day, we have 95% humidity. When it first started to get hot I was very against it! The members who know me know that I love the cold. I have gotten used to the heat - - - but not all the way. I was really not a fan this week because it got REALLY, REALLY hot! July and August are the HOTTEST months of the year. During the day we pray for clouds becausethe shade is wonderful. As it changes to night, it's most peaceful and beautiful, with bugs of course.

One night, as we were walking it slowly changed from day to night. I was able to see more stars and the creations of God during the nights here in Valle Hermoso. As I was peacefully walking with my companion, I was reminded of one of my greatest testimony builders before I left, an experience from my job before the mission, Harmons.

Many things can testify of Jesus Christ. One day, when I was working, pushing carts at Harmon's, I heard a song play on the overheard speakers, "Little Wonders,"  by Rob Thomas. It comes from one of my favorite Disney movies. I listened to the lyrics as I took out the trash. As the part of the movie played through my mind, I felt a rush of something I can't explain. It's a feeling that's common to me only at times when I intensely feel the Spirit. As I exited the building, I put in an earbud and turned on the song again, analyzing it for ways it relates to the gospel. The lyrics stunningly, in my mind, related so well to mortal life and the Atonement of Jesus Christ. The following are the lyrics to the song and my attempt to verbally analyze them.
As we repent, we are told that our sins are no longer remembered by the Lord,

Let it go
Let it roll right off your shoulder
Don't you know
The hardest part is over
Let it in
Let your clarity define you
In the end
We will only just remember how it feels

In the end of these mortal lives, we will only remember the unconditional mercy our Mediator shows on us when we truly repent.

In one of the classrooms in the Alta Seminary building, a teacher had a single strand of string that ran the diagonal length of the room. The string, itself, represents eternity, forever extending in both directions. In the middle of the string was a single knot, which represents mortal life. That knot will always be there no matter how long the string is. Mortal life will always determine our eternal kingdom. This mortal life, this blip in time, is so vitally important it accounts for the entire eternity afterwards. Therefore:

Our lives are made
In these small hours

Small tender mercies we see from the Lord:

These little wonders
These twists and turns of fate
Time falls away
But these small hours
These small hours still remain

Again reminding us of the power of repentance:

Let it slide
Let your troubles fall behind you

Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” So I thought as I listened:

Let it shine
Until you feel it all around you
And I don't mind
If it's me you need to turn to
We'll get by
It's the heart that really matters in the end

Earth life is critical:

Our lives are made
In these small hours
These little wonders
These twists and turns of fate
Time falls away
But these small hours
These small hours still remain

The power of the Atonement is one of amazement! We will never fully understand its power, but the Lord does:

All of my regret
Will wash away some how
But I can not forget
The way I feel right now

So using the Atonement here in mortal life is so critical to the eternal progression of self:

In these small hours
These little wonders
These twists and turns of fate
These twists and turns of fate
Time falls away but these small hours
These small hours, still remain
Still remain
These little wonders
These twists and turns of fate
Time falls away
But these small hours
These little wonders still remain

I know that each of us receive our promptings from the Spirit in different ways. God knows each one of us personally and He knows how He can touch each of our hearts so that we can have a change. I know that God loves us all and wants us to be successful and as we turn to him, our lives WILL change.

Elder CJones: Another Baptism

"Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pains to bring it to light."
-George Washington

This week we were ablet o have another baptism; another soul on their journey back to their Father in Heaven. Nothing brings greater joy then that in the heart of a missionary when another investigator wants to be baptized.

Every week we start with a fresh slate. We give our investigators a few weeks to come to church and if they don't show progression then we leave them so they have a chance to reflect on our messages.

I love it out here!! I am getting more comfortable out here and I love the mission! The Mexican people normally only eat one meal a day in the early afternoon. It's a large meal. We eat tortillas everyday. Beans, rice, and chicken are the main foods that we eat. I am getting tired of eating chicken haha. Since I live so close to the border, there are benefits from that. We have a lot of American restaurants here. My companion has been out for 10 months. We are working hard
together!

As we celebrate our country's anniversary remember the blessings we have as a country and as a church and never forget that we can share the Gospel whenever we want and in other countries they can't.

Elder CJones: Bautismito

"Everything I've been through, everything I'm about to go through in my career and my life, if my family wasn't with me and didn't support me, it would be really tough."
-Karl Malone

This week was really good we finished with two baptisms and a less active wanting to come back to church. It's been hard in the past little while to get people to church but we are slowly getting better. We received transfer news this week and both my companion and I will be staying in the same area.

We are teaching some really cool people this week! Cynthia, the sister of Anahi, is working to be baptized this Saturday. She is 18 years old and has a really cool and energetic 2 year old son. We have dropped a lot of people this week because they weren't keeping their commitments. We will be starting this week fresh with new people to teach.

We have zone meetings every week and conferences with the president every month. Since Christmas, we haven't had a visit from any visiting authority.

Quiero escribir en Español por que es tan mas fácil a pensar en Español. If you need, use Google Translate haha.

Elder CJones: Preparing the People and a '69 Chevelle

Valle Hermoso is a really really cool place.  It's small enough that it doesn't get too crazy and yet, it's easy to memorize, and it's big enough that there are some really fun things here are well--like power outages . . .over and over again. This week we had another power outage, the third since I have been in the area.

My companion has been working in two areas. He goes once a week with a zone leader to a town called Sauteña. It's a tiny, tiny town about an hour away. During this time I get the chance to work with the other zone leader.

We have been working a lot with Anahi. She is preparing for her baptism on Friday. She is really really excited to get baptized and she has been waiting patiently for each week to come to church so she can learn, meet new people, and have the three times at church so she can get baptized. She has made a lot of changes in her life and is so excited for Friday!

We have been working to find a lot more people this week. At times, it's difficult to find more people to teach depending on the day and the area. My companion and I have been working really hard to teach and help as many people as we can. We are the leading area in Valle Hermoso this month. As we keep praying and searching for people we are receiving blessings of the great things and miracles of the Lord.

I know this church is true and I know that nothing is better for a personal testimony than a mission! I love you all and I want the best for you!

Oh, I saw my favorite car this week, even though it is going through a hard restoration process, a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle.

Elder CJones: A Clear Mind and A Spiritual Force

Well, this week I started off on exchanges with two of the three zone leaders in our area. Before I explain too much, I got the permission with one of my zone leaders, from the president, to play on a public basketball team with our bishop and members of the ward! This is one of the reasons we had exchanges, as well. We use these games to contact and find people to teach. After the game, I was talking to one of the two leaders and they were explaining the importance of baptismal dates. He explained it as a goal--like the end of a race. Without a goal or finish line we are working towards no goal. Therefore, I learned a little bit clearer the importance of setting goals and baptismal dates for the investigators.

During the rest of this last week we worked on setting these goals with the investigators and we saw more success as we worked hard. We had 3 investigators come to church, Anahi, one that I talked about last week and 2 new investigators, little girls, Estrella and Alma.

I recognized that as we set goals and work with the investigators with these goals, we will find success because the Spirit and us as missionaries have something to work with. This week, we lead our zone of 14 missionaries!

I know that we as a church have success. This week I finished reading "A Marvelous Work and a Wonder" by the apostle, LeGrand Richards. As I finished, my testimony of the Gospel was strengthened. I know that we are blessed as a church for having the truth and relelation from God. For all who wants to know the message we share as missionaries, I challenge you to read that book to understand the message that we share to the entire world.

"The Mormon people teach the American religion; their principles teach the people not only of Heaven and its attendant glories, but how to live so that their social and economic relations with each other are placed on a sound basis. If the people follow the teachings of this Church, nothing can stop their progress — it will be limitless. There have been great movements started in the past but they have died or been modified before they reached maturity. If Mormonism is able to endure, unmodified, until it reaches the third and fourth generation, it is destined to become the greatest power the world has ever known."

Elder CJones: Elder Indiana Jones

"I think it’s time to ask yourself; what do you believe in?"
-Indiana Jones

Well, I bought a hat this week to protect my face a little more from the sun and I became Elder Indiana Jones!

Not much has been really going on in my life or the life of my companion. We have been working hard to find people that really want to change and better their lives. A couple days ago, we talked with our neighbors, Cynthia and Anahi. They are young women that are really cool and are interested in the church. They listened to our lesson about Joseph Smith and later that night came to our activity to watch a movie about Joseph Smith and the restoration of the Gospel. The next day they came to church with us and they are willing to keep listening and are wanting to come to church again!

We decided to have a mission activity every week so that we can verify better the desire of our investigators. We had 3 show up this week, even without the help of the members who all went to the temple. This next week we are hoping to find more people and to get more help from the members as well.

Well, this email is a little short this week. I just want all of you to know that even though all this is hard, it's so worth it in the end! I know this Gospel is true and I am a witness of miracles here in Mexico and I know that Lord can work miracles as we listen for the Spirit and follow His promptings always!

Elder CJones: Valle Hermoso and a Miracle

"Now when our hearts were depressed, and we were about to turn back, behold, the Lord comforted us, and said: Go amongst thy brethren, the Lamanites, and bear with patience thine afflictions, and I will give unto you success."
-Alma 26:27

I came to this city of "Valle Hermoso" on Tuesday and I am really enjoying the area and the people! My new companion is from Veracruz. He is a really hard worker and we got a lot done this week. In this area we ride bikes because we are able to get a lot more done through the day. My legs are getting stronger due biking and I am getting healthier. Ha ha.

We have found a handful of families that want to be taught.

Francisco and Dulce are a young couple that don't have a lot. They have a desire to go to church and to learn. Years ago, missionaries talked with them so they have a Book of Mormon but have yet to read it. They are married. They are just working on their desire and they can be baptized in a couple weeks.

Milser and Rosendo are a really young couple--Rosendo is 20 and Milser is 15. They are not married bu we are working with them to gather the money and get them married. They have a ton of desire to change and come to church. They have come to Church once, but they work a lot because they are preparing to have a baby. They need prayers to find and save the money to come to church.

Victor and his family have a small desire to come to church and can feel the power of the Spirit when we teach them. They need to save money to get married, as well.

Adriana is a wonderful lady. Two of her sons are members of the Church and she knows that it is the right path but she is a little fearful of commitments and going to church. She feels a lot of pressure but wants to change. She loves the Book of Mormon and reads it all the time. Pray for her and her family that they will help her be a convert to the church.

Those are the people and families we are teaching right now. Our goal in our area for the month of June is 15 baptisms. Please pray that the people will accept our message and that they will want to follow the example of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This week I learned something really really powerful about how the Lord is watching over each one of us and that we need to constantly listen for the Spirit so that we can be His hands. One of the elders with me here in Valle Hermoso was one of the elders that lived with me in Bugambilias in Februrary and March. On Friday, he asked me if I ever heard the whole story of one of my converts, I hadn't and he told me the story. I will use both sides of the story to tell what happened. My side is the normal font and the different font type is that of our investigator.

I started serving in Bugambilias, an area of Reynosa, on January 2. This particular day my companion and I contacted an apparently "golden family". We worked with this family for a month and this slowly progressed to one night when we had a FHE planned for them. It was a cold rainy night, January 27th, they decided that since the weather was cold they wanted to stay at home. Sadly we headed in the direction of our home to warm up and discuss our plans for the next day. As we passed a small neighborhood we had a strong feeling to contact one more house. We entered the neighborhood, walking down the streets we felt that a certain house needed our message. After the initial knock we were greeted by a man, short and full of energy, Nacho. He invited us in and as we got to know him we learned that he had been baptized 17 years before, but after moving and not finding the church, he became inactive.

Elderes, I would like to share with you the experience I had with Elder Jones and Elder Carrizales when they first came to my house. They visited me on January 27th at night, well that morning I had a dream, a dream that I was walking in a area very dark and in the distence I could see a light, a pillar of light, I began to walk toward the pillar and I felt a hand on my shoulder, an angel stood next to me and said, "Irving, your family has a lot of problems right now, do you want to save this relationship? Does it mean enough to you?" "Yes, I want to keep my two kids and fix the problems I have in my relationship." I continued to walk closer to the light and as I proceeded closer I was stopped again by the angel, "Irving, your family has a lot of problems right now, do you want to save this relationship? Does it mean enough to you?" "Yes"I repeated. As I arrived at the light, I saw there was a hole in teh ground, again I felt a hand on my shoulder, "Irving, your family has a lot of problems right now, do you want to save this relationship? Does it mean enough to you?" "Yes, I really do" I jumped into the light and a strong hand caught me before I fell, "Irving, do you really want to save it?" "Yes, I really do!" As the angel let me go I woke up on the floor next to my bed.

I began to pack my clothes, I was going to leave my family after I finished work that night, I was going to leave if nothing happened. And as the day came to a close Elder Carrizales and Elder Jones knocked on my door, I had a bad attitude about this, I just wanted them to share their message and leave.

Walking into the house, we started to get to know the family and how they were doing. They seeme happy. The husband was talking a lot and the wife was standing silent in the corner of the room. As we prepared to pray with the family, we had an impression to ask the wife if she had any questions. She asked, "Do you know how to fix a relationship?"As she asked this, both of them started to crazy and ask for help, they really wanted to better their relationship and their family but were having a lot of problems.

We worked with them for almost three months. After those three months the Spirit was able to abide in their home. They are active in the Church and Irving was able to baptize the wife after they were married. They have a goal next to travel to Tampico next April, where Nacho is from, to be sealed for time and all eternity.

I testify of the truthfulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and as we truly turn our lives to the Savior that we can have a changed life, we can feel of His love for each one of us. Through this experience, I know that Heavenly Father knows each one of us and that He cares and wants the best for us all. I know this work is real and I testify of the reality of Christ love for each one of us. I testify of His Gospel and the reality of His Infinite Matchless Love.
